We're thrilled to announce another exciting milestone in the Viking Park Connectivity project.
The project connects Viking Park to the main harbour area in Gimli, with tree-lined pathways and sidewalks that provide safer passage in a park-like setting. Part of the project includes the Breakwater Timber Boardwalk, and special commemorative areas such as the rejuvenated Cenotaph and the creation of the Fjallkona Walkway.
We would like to thank the hundred of donors who supported Viking Park and the Viking Park Connectivity project. Viking Park and the Connectivity Project have created storied canvasses for donors to mark meaningful moments in their lives. Many western Icelanders chose to celebrate their Icelandic legacy and the ongoing connections between Iceland and Manitoba, while others have taken the opportunity to honour family or to acknowledge their special relationships with the community.
As well as beautifying Gimli, and celebrating the town's unique culture and heritage, these projects have created safer and more accessible streets and pathways for everyone. The improved signage will not only help tourists find key locations in our community, the wayfinding markers will also help them appreciate their importance.
The Viking Park Campaign Cabinet Committee is proud to honour people who have shown their community spirit through recognition opportunities in both projects. We are planning an opening celebration later in 2021, when one can be held safely. Meanwhile, there is still time to make your mark in Viking Park by making a donation to the project.
Donations will also help build the Icelandic Festival of Manitoba's endowment fund. This fund ensures we can fulfill our mission to promote and sustain interest in Icelandic culture and descent, primarily through an annual family-oriented festival. We are committed to keeping festival events low to no cost, in order to ensure they are accessible for everyone.
