The Viking Village Background

Our village presents a view a thousand years into the past of Iceland, when Vikings roamed the seas, exploring, trading, settling and occasionally even raiding.

The term Viking wasn’t really one used at the time as a noun, usually in the term ‘go a vikingr’ used in the sagas to describe people going away on a long journey.   Due to their innovative shipbuilding and navigation skills these Vikings, or Norsemen, visiting places as far as L'Anse aux Meadows here in Canada and Northern Africa, as well as settling throughout Europe, and of course Iceland.

In Iceland, which was in large part settled by these Vikings, yearly meetings, or Alþingi ('the thing' or 'allthing') occurred, where people would travel from far and wide to hear recitation of the laws, make oaths, settle disagreements, marry, and of course trade with each other. Much like in our village, people travelled and lived in tents for a few days to see old friends and make new ones.

As you visit our village, you will encounter many skilled re-enactors demonstrating aspects of the day to day lifestyle of the Vikings. Our re-enactors have spent thousands of hours researching and recreating objects from this period.  We put these objects to good use, displaying a wide range of crafts from the period. These may involve fire, sharp or dangerous items so please ask before touching items and where you see a rope, don’t run under it. Please be sure to ask questions, we will be happy to answer them!

Note: the village is closed during all fight shows, and re-opens after the entertainment.

Kiddie Viking Shield Wall 

The Kiddie shield wall is an opportunity for children under thirteen to engage with the Vikings in a fun manner, learning how to work together in a shield wall, marching and shouting. To keep it safe we won’t be teaching the children how to fight, otherwise they might raid our village!

Rules of the Viking Village 

The things you see on display are mostly hand crafted and as such are precious to us. There will be a trading tent where you might be able to purchase some of the things that we use. Please ask before handling or touching anything in the village. Due to public health regulations we are not permitted to share food or other consumables with the public. Otherwise, come on in and enjoy yourselves royally!
