More than 2000 years ago, Scandinavian ancestors of the Vikings invented the runic alphabet. The characters were carved into wood or stone with a knife or chisel, so the alphabet's letters are straight lines that could be carved easily. The Vikings believed that some runes had magic powers and would bring them good luck.
